2019 Opening Day Top 100 Prospects

Published

on

FINALLY the 2019 season is here. The minor league season that is. If you’ve followed along with the ITL Army on Patreon, you’ve had my top 500 prospect list. This list has been updated once a month for the entire off-season. There have been a lot of meaningful movement, as I have scouted so many players since the season has ended. The Arizona Fall League to Cactus League minor league games, there hasn’t been an update with movement. Today though, I post my top 100 list to all. Drafts are over, so this is meant to be a reflection of day one of the MLB season. If you want updates, join up with the ITL Army on Patreon, as I update my ranks every two weeks throughout the season.

This list represents my top 100 in groups of ten. I’ll give you a few notes on the grouping, as well. This list is also designed for fantasy. Make sure to keep that in mind. As well, I don’t really consider proximity in the ranking of these prospects. This is all on ranking as far as value and future value.

PROSPECT ONE TOP 100

10Jo AdellLAA2020OF

Boy is this group of ten going to look different in June. We should have four players (Assuming Vlad Jr comes up in April or early May). Wander Franco is one of the more fascinating prospects for the early goes of the minor league season. He’s mastered every test so far, so I am interested to see how he continues to tackle the each level, and solidify himself as the top mid-season prospect in all of baseball. Alex Kirilloff is one of my favs. He started moving to 1B in spring training, so we should see that continue in the minors. I expect him to continue to rake, and don’t be surprised if he jumps over Bo Bichette, or even his teammate Royce Lewis. Adell is in bummer spot. He’s out for 8-12 weeks, and will be here in Arizona until summer time. We should see his season debut sometime around July.

Taylor Trammell is the least heralded of this group, I believe. I interviewed him during the AFL, and came away with a lot of insight on the person. He doesn’t think about launch angle or home runs, he just wants to compete. That turned some fantasy people off of him. I might be the high guy, but I think he can max his tool’s out. Looking for a big year from him. Jesus Sanchez is the ultimate “Welsh” guy. I stand on an island alone for The Jesus. He doesn’t walk a ton, so he has to continue to make solid contact. I believe he can and will. Put that with top power and bat speed, I think Jesus could become more mainstream in 2019.

30Nolan GormanSTL20213B

Of this grouping, I’d say the most aggressive prospects I am on, are Mackenzie Gore, Ke’Bryan Hayes, Chris Paddack and Nolan Gorman. Hayes, Paddack and Gore are probably the safest, and should be owned at all cost. I am really nervous about Victor Victor. I am one of the high guys on him. I am banking on his skills coming together after a few years away, and developing an above average hit tool. If the power can reach 20, he’ll be a household name. My fear though, is he is the next Julio-Pablo. Please no.

40Nico HoernerCHC2020SS

I am team Larnach. That also makes three Twins in my top 35. He’s shown the ability to hit for solid average, and when you pair that with his power, he could be the real deal. No one loves George Valera more than I do. They might try to put him on a higher numerical rank, but Valera is my guy. I interviewed George during the off-season as he was training in the DR. He was coming back from an injury that ended his AZL season. Once he hit stateside, he’s come back as dialed in as ever. George is in for a big year. Nico Hoerner opened my eyes, and the rest of the prospect world during the AFL. His body grew, he refined his hit tool to minimize the negatives, and his power is becoming more present by the day. There are now high expectations for Nico, but I think he can deliver in 2019.

50Kristian RobinsonAZ2022OF

A ton of HUGE target prospects in this range for me. Jerred Kelenic is a personal fav. He lived up to most of the hype once I saw him in person at Mariners camp. Great hit tool. Bubba Thompson is coming off a very nice 2018. He looked jacked in Rangers camp, and is a power/speed combo that reminds me of George Springer when he was in the minors. I’m watching for George to boost his average, even if it stunts some power for a bit. Marco Luciano is the lottery ticket to buy. He hasn’t played a came stateside yet, but early reports on the bat and power are off the charts. I should be seeing a LOT of him in the AZL this season, so get ready for updates. Own him though. Whatever you got to do. Make it happen.

Hunter Greene is on my watch list. He was struggling during minor league camp this spring training. He is coming off an injury from last year, and his command still is suffering. I don’t know what his current time table is, but it feels like he might not join a minor league club and pitch until after may. Team Pratto right here. I expect a power boost this year. More hard contact. Luis Patino is a bit bigger and stronger and should continue on his successful 2018.

Esteury Ruiz or “Mini Alfonso” has he’s known is one of my personal favs. No doubt I’m the high one in the industry on him, but from the minute I saw him with the Royals followed by the Padres in 2017, I was all in. Nolan Jones is a big human being, who should see a lot more love this year. I am looking for the turn from Heliot Ramos this season as well. His debut was big, he leveled off in 2018, so I’m looking for a big jump in production relative to my future ranks with him.

Two of the most exciting prospects to jump on the scene this year will be Julio Rodriguez with the Mariners and Ronny Mauricio with the Mets. J-Rod will be making his pro debut in the AZL. He’s a big bodied OF with power and speed. Ronny is going into his second season stateside, and his projectable body and bat skills have people excited he could battle for the top spot in the Mets prospect ranks.

Many don’t agree, but it still feels like a big year for evaluators on Leody Taveras. Fantasy mainly. He hasn’t met expectations, or comes close yet, so this season we are looking for the jump up. If Evan White’s bat continues to progress, and he finds more power, he might be a top 25 prospect by mid to late season. So many good pitchers here. This is why I am ok waiting on pitching, because of the likes of Brady Singer, Adrian Morejon and DL Hall.

I am a little lower on Jazz now than the rest of the back. What’s funny, was I’ve been higher than most for the last two years. Because he had a big boost in production, he got the massive rank boost. Watch if he struggles early, and people start jumping off. That’s your Que to jump back in. Love Garcia. Love Winn. Love Lynch maybe even more (though I have him behind them). Give me the shares of all those guys.
