The ITL Army IDP League 2017 Recap

Published

on

Hello, ITL Nation! My name is Rob Diton (although you may know me as FAM, the First Army Member) and Bogman and the Welsh have graciously let me start writing recaps for the ITL Army SoMuchFun IDP League. This league was created in the summer of 2016 with all members of the ITL Army, most of whom are Lieutenants or Captains. Once again, this proves that it pays to enlist in this high-quality podcast community! To give you a frame of reference, here are the settings for this specific league: 16 teams, 8-10 keepers (must keep at least 4 players in both offense and defense), ½ PPR, and full Individual Defensive Players (or IDP, if you’re not into the whole brevity thing). For those of you who have not played IDP before, I have to say that even though this was my first time using this setting, I find it very difficult to go back to regular D/ST. It definitely adds a whole new wrinkle to fantasy football, and I highly suggest you give it a try.

This league is very competitive, as there have only been three teams who have made the playoffs both years. 2017 was another successful season, and a great time was had by all. It was a particularly enjoyable season for Joe, who won the championship, after sneaking into the playoffs as the 8 seed. He now is the proud owner of a ring from Official Fantasy Rings and is officially the team to beat. Let’s Tarantino this- go backward, and talk briefly about the 2017 season of the SoMuchFun IDP League.

Though Matt was the defending champion going into the season, he got off to a rough start; even he knew, way before his record fell to 1-7, that he was not repeating as champion. He ended up trading away David Johnson and Khalil Mack (thinking of the future) and currently has loaded up with 14 picks in the first 10 rounds of this year’s draft. Once keepers are announced, that amount will decrease (when a player is kept, the team loses a draft pick for that round). Regardless, with all those picks, Matt should be able to bounce back this upcoming season and make a run at the playoffs.

One team that started in the opposite direction of Matt’s team last season was SuperLadouceur, led by yours truly. I started 8-1, talked all sorts of smack to the other teams, and was already sizing up my ring finger . . . then Ezekiel Elliott got suspended for six games. While I did manage to stay afloat and enter the playoffs as the 1 seed, I finished the regular season 1-3, as Dak Prescott and Dez Bryant both struggled mightily in Zeke’s absence (if you’re not able to tell who my favorite team is by now . . .). Unfortunately, I was eliminated by Joe in the first round. I made the poor decision to trade away future draft picks to win immediately, and that plan definitely backfired. In such a deep keeper league (or a dynasty league), it always pays to remember that you’re thinking of the future just as much as the present. Do as I say, not as I do, kids!

Anywho, after I was swiftly eliminated from the playoffs, the Final Four was set with the semifinal matchups pitting Evan, as the 6 seed, against one of our fearless leaders of ITL, Bogman, as the 2 seed. The other grouping saw the 4 seed Cornfield, co-managed by Ryan and Matt, against Joe as the 8 seed. Despite three teams hitting 200 points in the first round, no one hit that total in semi-finals, but both matchups were pretty one-sided. Joe took down Matt/Ryan by a score of 177.68-138.72 and Evan dispatched of our beloved Bogman 197.14-160.04

Again, we’re still very early in this process, as the NFL Draft hasn’t happened yet and this league doesn’t announce our keepers until August. However, there are still several teams that have set themselves up nicely for a playoff push this year. Jonesy has a nice core of RBs with Lamar Miller, Todd Gurley, and LeSean McCoy, a solid QB with a great backup in Ben Roethlisberger and Pat Mahomes, and plenty of defensive stars in Fletcher Cox, Keanu Neal, Dexter Fowler, and Paul Posluszny. Jesse also has great defensive pieces in Alec Ogletree, Reshad Jones, Myles Garrett, and Carlos Dunlap, and does not yet have a first round keeper, which puts him squarely in the running for Saquon Barkley. One half of In This League, The Welsh, has put up a very solid core of stars as well, with Le’Veon Bell, Aaron Rodgers, Keenan Allen, Jordan Reed, Reuben Foster, Josh Gordon, and Jadeveon Clowney. Not to be outdone, Bogman has also assembled quite a squad, with Leonard Fournette, Drew Brees, Justin Houston, Telvin Smith, JPP, Tyreek Hill, and Ezekiel Ansah.

I’m looking forward to keeping you posted on the ITL Army SoMuchFun IDP League throughout the 2018 season. Please let me know, via twitter at @iDITONdoit, if there is anything specific you would like to know (draft results, etc.) and I’ll be sure to include them in subsequent write-ups. Thanks for reading!
