1) Shohei Ohtani SP/DH

The top “Prospect” in baseball is hardly a prospect as we know, but regardless he is just that for at least a month or so of the season. The two way player will pitch and play some OF and DH. Ohtani is a freak of a player topping his FB in the upper 90’s to triple digits, to go with a plus curve and splitter. You hear forkball thrown out as well. As a hitter he struck out 27% last year, and may deal with some AVG issues (especially as he translates to US baseball). The power though is a plus plus offering. Many reports are mixed on his speed from an 80 speed to a 65, but most agree the speed isn’t going to be about SB’s. It’s possible we could see a 6 man rotation on Ohtani, and the question we sit with is will he surpass 400 AB’s. Questions aside, this is the dude.

2) Jo Adell OF

I saw Adell a few games before he moved up a level in rookie ball, and he really stood out from the crowd of prospects playing in that particular game. His mature body goes along with solid speed/power combo. He has quick hands that helps him as his swing might get a tad long at times. He’s got a real chance to start producing 20/20 seasons in the minors this coming year. Seeing both Adell and Reds Taylor Trammell this year, I have the comparison in my mind of similarities shared between these two. Adell might have a higher ceiling though. Bullish on Adell.

3) Kevin Maitan SS/3B

The curious case of Kevin Maitan is how I start conversations with Maitan. He left the Braves with many questions coming into this new start with the Angels. Pre 2017 Maitan was the man. Mid-season and some weight gain caused big concerns. This was followed by reports of bad contact and slower than expected speed, but before the season ended we got some positive reports from instructs. Maitan is still really young, and most likely going to move to 3B, but I am still in. I expect a turn in AVG this coming year with possibly a less aggressive assignment and a power uptick. This is a good buy low time.

4) Jahmai Jones OF

Jones is great athlete that isn’t tied to just the “athlete” tag, because he’s got applied tools and skills that make him high upside prospect. Not that it’s relevant to scouting, but his brother is Marvin Jones of the Detroit Lions to further hit home the athletic blood lines. Jones already displays great speed. The power may get to the 20 mark, but he could go the way of more of an AJ Pollock with under 20 HR power, but a .280 AVG and 30 SB’s. Jones is trending up.

5) Brandon Marsh OF

Marsh missed some time in ‘17, but he dominated the time he was out. The power/speed combo is really tempting with Marsh. I wonder if the speed is going to go the way of power once he gets to the majors, but right now he has 20/20+ written all over him. His quick bat should develop his power as he progresses and I want to have many shares of Marsh, and you should too.

6) Matt Thiass

7) Griffin Canning

8) Chris Rodriguez

9) Torii Hunter Jr

10) Jamie Barria
