1) Royce Lewis SS
It’s not often we call first overall picks a pleasant surprise, but to me that’s what this was. From a talent perspective, it felt like there were a few others I meant have gone with one, but Lewis had one of the better pro debuts of any of the top picks. Lewis continuously made good strong contact, showed patience at the plate, and though his power hasn’t jumped yet, his speed was on full display. The Twins are keeping him at SS, which could stick even though many have speculated he could go to center field. Royce almost reminds me of a better contact/patience Byron Buxton who is playing SS. I am pretty aggressive on Lewis.

2) Brent Rooker 1B/LF
I’ve been a big fan of Rooker’s since college. I was higher than most coming into the draft, and did not disappoint in his pro debut. He hit 18 HR’s in less than 250 AB’s across two levels, while maintaining a solid .280 AVG. Not a lot was made about the great power that Rooker puts on the field, and it’s safe to say he lead all 2017 draft picks in homers last year. He strikes out a bit, and there is some AVG concerns to consider. He was a bit older for the lower levels that he destroyed, so this is an important year, but I think he’s an advanced power bat that could be 30+. I’m buying on Rooker.
3) Alex Kirilloff OF
Sadly 2017 was a lost season for Kiriloff as he had TJ and missed the whole year. He was coming off a great pro debut that saw him hit over .300. I was pretty big on him going into last year pre surgery. I think the way he makes consistent contact, with solid in game power that should follow, makes him an attractive fantasy option. The injury stuff puts a wrinkle in it, because we are left wondering what he is post surgery, plus the fact it could take longer than this year. I am a bit aggressive in my ranking almost from an investment perspective. He could fizzle a bit this year, but I’d like to make sure I own him, because if he comes back strong, he could fly up boards.
4) Nick Gordon SS
Besides Gordon’s rap album, nothing he does jumps off the page at you. That also doesn’t mean I’m saying he’s not good. The opposite, I think he is quietly a good player, that gets a bit over hyped because he is a “Gordon”. I saw him play multiple times in the ‘16 AZL. He wasn’t overly impressive to me, but that didn’t take away he got the job done. He’s probably a lesser fantasy option since his counting stats are a bit muted. I’d be surprised if he hit more than the teens for HR, and if he stole more than 20 bases. This is a personal opinion, but after watching him I just question he ends up as a SS, and have speculated he’s going to be a 2B for a couple years now. Take that for what you will. He’s going to probably end up hitting for AVG, so I think he has a decently high floor.
5) Wander Javier SS
Javier should be in top 10 to top 15 of biggest risers from last year to this year. His pro-debut was pretty solid hitting .299 with 4 HR and SB in just about 150 AB’s. Javier has a full tool set, that should allow him to stick at SS, hit for AVG to all fields, steal some bases and as he grows, so should the power. Like many you’ll see on some of these lists, we’ve got to speculate on the future stars and take risks so we don’t miss out. Javier might not work out to a level where he’s top 20 overall in two years, but he represents the type of skills to get there. I am all about not paying full price in a year, when we can get a head with the discounts now. Buy some Javier!
6) Akil Baddoo OF
7) Stephen Gonzalves SP
8) Lewin Diaz 1B
9) LaMonte Wade OF
10) Brusdar Graterol SP
